Begin with the end in Mind

Cake decorating and sugar art are great creative outlets.  You don’t have to be an amazing artist to create something that your family or friends will love to receive from you.

It could be a simple batch of cupcakes with a swirl of icing on top and a few sprinkles of color.

It could be to celebrate something special such as a birthday or maybe an online contest you want to give a try.

Whatever the occasion time and planning is key to ensure successful delivery of the product.

You have to begin with the end in mind.  A general idea of what it will look like, the flavors, the kind of icing and most importantly how to construct it.

I normally start with a rough sketch or drawing and include items such as how tall it will be, what kind of pans I can use, sometimes what flavor each layer will be and any other details that need to be included.

Then once I have a general idea, have made any adjustments, I begin the construction process.  Sometimes I will take the pans or other items I will be using and make a mock up to get an idea of what it will look like so I can make adjustments such as making sure a the cake board will be big enough or is there something I don’t particularly like and change my mind.

Then I begin creating the pieces, baking the cakes, making the icings, preparing the fondant or whatever items will be needed for the project.  If it is a project that is to be sold I normally begin baking the day ahead of the due date so it is as fresh as possible.  Other items such as fondant figures, flowers, etc. are normally done at least a week ahead.

Preparation

The process of creating the project begins and learning through trial and error of what works and what doesn’t is always going to happen.  That’s why practice makes perfect. For example, I still don’t know how to do fondant figures very well but can make some basic shapes.  That’s where more practice will be needed as I go along.

Then once everything is done, take a picture to document, save  and share your work.
